Donot use it with a computer other than the one forwhich it was designed.Do not use this computer with a battery packother than the one specified (the one includedwith the computer or the specified batterypack sold separately)Do not touch the terminals on the battery pack. The bat-tery pack may no longer function properly if the contactsare dirty or damaged.Do not expose the battery pack to water, or allow it to be-come wet.
8Getting StartedNOTEThe battery pack may become warm during recharging ornormal use. This is completely normal.Recharging will not commence if internal temperature ofthe battery pack is outside of the allowable temperaturerange (0 °C to 50 °C {32°F to 122 °F}) “Bat-tery Power”. Once the allowable range requirement issatisfied, charging begins automatically. Note that the re-charging time varies based on the usage conditions. (Re-charging takes longer than usual when the temperature is10 °C {50 °F} or less.)If the temperature is low, the operating time is shortened. Onlyuse the computer within the allowable temperature range.This computer has a high temperature mode function thatprevents the degradation of the battery in high tempera-ture environments. 19OperationThe power saving function is factory set, so if there is no input from a key, the touchpad, the tablet button, the digitizer or an external mouse (when one is connected) fora certain interval of time, the power to the LCD and hard disk may be turned off. TheLCD will resume operation when the touch pad, the digitizer or an external mouse(when one is connected) is used or a key or the tablet button is pressed.The power to the LCD may be turned off even when an application software is beinginstalled. In this case, because it is conceivable that a selection dialog box will beshown, do not press Space or Enter to attempt to resume from this conditionas doing so may trigger a selection, but instead, press a key unrelated to the directtriggering of a selection, like Ctrl .In addition, when the computer is left alone, it automatically enters the standby orhibernation mode. The computer will resume by sliding the power switch. These may result in malfunctions or damage to the pen.Clean the pen tip and screen prior to operation. Foreign particles can scratch the screen andimpede the operation of the pen.Use the pen only for the computer screen. 42AppendixHard Disk Backup FunctionThe hard disk backup function creates a backup area (storage area) on the hard disk. This area is to back up (store) hard disk contentsor restore backed up contents to their original locations.By backing up the data on your hard disk to a backup area, you can protect your data from loss or damage resulting from operationalerrors or other factors. Also, you can back up or restore hard disk contents using this computer alone, without having to use othermedia or peripheral devices.At the time of purchase, the hard disk backup function is disabled. If you follow the procedure below to create a backup area, thehard disk backup function will be enabled, and you will be able to back up your data. Note, that once the backup function has beenenabled, you will have to perform the reinstallation procedure to disable it again ( page 38).Disconnect or remove all peripheral devices (except for the CD/DVD drive), as the backup areamay not be created properly while these devices are connected.Be sure the AC adaptor is connected to the computer.A backup area cannot be created if the hard disk is already divided into several partitions. Returnthe computer to its condition at the time of purchase (one partition only), and create the backuparea.To divide the partition, make the selection when the backup area is created ( page 43 step 8).If the partition configuration is changed (partitions created, size changed, etc.) after the backuparea has been created, it will no longer be possible to execute the backup function.
