Setting the TimersThis TV can be set to turn on or off automatically at specific times that you choose. Before usingthe timers, you must set the TV’s clock, as described previously.Setting the On/Off Timer1 Press the Menu button. Setting Up Your Remote ControlThis TV’s remote control can operate almost any VCR, cable box, or DVD. After it has been set upproperly, your remote control can operate in four different modes: TV, VCR, Cable, or DVD.Pressing the corresponding button on the remote control allows you to switch between thesemodes, and control whichever piece of equipment you choose. In Phantom Mode, the center sound is output through both left and right speakers.Normal:  Selected when the center speaker is smaller than the main TV speakers. In Normal Mode, the sound of the center channel is output through both left and right speakers.Wide:     Selected when the center speaker is larger than the TV speaker. In Wide Mode, thesound of center channel is output through only the center speaker.After selecting the mode, move the joystick down to select “Center”. Next, move the joystick rightor left and depending on personal preference, fine tune the volume by selecting any valuebetween -10 and +10. Follow a similar procedure for “Rear”. Move the joystick down to select“Delay”. Next, move the joystick right or left and, depending on personal preference, select anyvalue between 15ms and 30ms. (Some trial-and-error experimenting is necessary to find the opti-mal setting, which will vary according to individual preference).After entering values for “Center”, “Rear”, and “Delay”, use the joystick button to activate “Testtone”. During “Test tone”, a tone will cycle through the speakers so you can hear the surroundeffect and make additional changes as needed. 55Changing the Screen SizeWhen you press the ASPECT button on the remote control, the TV’s screen mode choices appearin sequence.  The screen displays in this order: Wide, Panorama, Zoom1, Zoom2, Stretch, 4:3.     The name of the screen mode will be displayed at the bottom of the TV screen.WideSets the picture to 16:9 wide mode.                 Note: If you watch a still image or the screen inthe 16:9 aspect ratio format for a long time, someimages may be burned onto the screen.PanoramaUse this mode for the wide aspect ratio of apanoramic picture.                    Zoom1Magnifies the sizeof the picture onscreen.Zoom2Magnifies the sizeof the picture morethan Zoom1. You can also move thepicture on screen usingthe “Scroll” function. Move the joystick up and down to scroll the pic-ture.StretchThe Stretch feature lets you view a 16:9 widescreen picture on theentire screen. If the screen is cut off on the top andbottom while you are watching a DVD player, thenswitch to the Stretch mode.You can also move the picture on screen using the “Scroll” function. Move the joystick up anddown to scroll the picture.4:3Sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode.  This is a standard TV screen size.Special Features54Viewing Closed Caption InformationYour TV decodes and displays the closed-caption information that is broadcast along with sometelevision shows. These captions are usually subtitles for the hearing impaired or translations intoother languages. All VCRs record the closed caption signal from television programs, so pre-recorded video tapes can also deliver closed-caption information. Check for the closed captionsymbol (     ) on the tape’s package or your TV program-schedule.Closed Captions1Press the Menu button. Movethe joystick down to selectSETUP, then press the joystickto enter.Quick way to access theCaption: Just press “Caption”on the remote control.2Move the joystick down toselect Closed Caption, thenpress the joystick to enter.3Move the joystick right or leftto turn closed captioning on/off.Misspelling and unusualcharacters sometimes occur inclosed caption transmissions,especially those of live events.There may be a small delaybefore captions appear whenyou change channels. Move the joystick right or left to choose “Caption” or“Text.” ln caption mode, captions appear at the bot-tom of the screen, and they usually cover only a smallportion of the picture. In text mode, information unre-lated to the program, such as news or weather, is dis-played. Text often covers a large portion of the screen.4If you wish, use the joystick button to change the cap-tioning channel or field. Then, press Menu to return tonormal viewing. Different channels and fields displaydifferent information. Movethe joystick down to selectPIP, then press the joystick toenter. 2Move the joystick down toselect to “Source”.3Move the joystick right or leftto select an external signal.You can choose between“TV”, Video 1”, “Video 2”,“Video 3”, or “S-Video 1”,“S-Video 2”.The signal from these inputswill not appear if you havenot connected any equipmentto the TV’s input jacks.For more information about externalsignals, see “Viewing a VCR, DVDor Camcorder Tape”.  If you select“TV.” the PIP image is the same asthe main image.NOTEYou can watch DVD on the PIP screen in the PC mode.Special Features56Viewing Picture-in-PictureOne of the most best features of your TV is the Picture-in-Picture (PIP) feature. The advanced PIPsystem allows you to watch two different pictures at once, even if you don’t have a VCR connectedto your TV.Selecting a PIP Screen1Press the Menu button. Movethe joystick down to select PIP,then press the joystick toenter.Quick way to access PIP:  Justpress “PIP” on the remote con-trol. 2Move the joystick right toselect PIP “On”.  The PIPimage will appear in the cor-ner of the screen.  3Press Menu to exit.NOTEWhen the cable box output is connected to ANT-B, it cannot beviewed in the PIP window.The PIP feature doesn’t work when the V-chip is activatedor the TV is in HD Component mode.  If you turn the TV off while watching and turn it on again, thenthe mode will return to normal video.When the PIP function is activated in Zoom1, Zoom2, Stretchmode, the screen mode is automatically changed to ‘Wide’ mode.
Changing the Picture-in-Picture ChannelAfter you set the PIP signal source (antenna or cable), it is easy to change channels.1Press the PIP CH▲ or CH▼to change the channel of thePIP image.                          2The PIP channel will appear inthe upper right corner of thescreen, above the mainimage.NOTEThe PIP channels are not available when RF is set to ANT B.(The PIP channels link to ANT-A.)59Special Features58Special FeaturesSwapping the Contents of the PIP Image and Main imagePress the Swap button. How to Enable/Disable the V-Chip1 Press the Menu button.  Move the joystickdown to select SETUP, then press thejoystick to enter. Enter your 4-digitPIN number. 2 The “V-Chip mode” screen will appear, and“V-Chip Lock” will be selected.To enable the V-Chip feature, move the joy-stick right so that the “V-Chip Lock” field isOn. (Moving the joystick to the right willalternate between On and Off.)How to Set up Restrictions Using the “TV guidelines”First, set up a personal identification number (PIN), and enable the V-Chip. :5 How to set the FV, D, L, S and V sub-ratings: First, highlight one of these TV-Ratings: TV-Y7,TV-PG, TV-14 or TV-MA (See Step 4, on previous page.)Next, while the TV-Rating is highlighted (BLUE), repeatedly move the joystick right.This will cycle through the available sub-ratings (FV, L, S, D or V).  A letter (“U” or “B”) willbe displayed for each sub-rating.  While the “U” or “B” is highlighted, move the joystickdown or up to change the sub-rating.                   Note: The V-chip will automatically block certain categories that are “More restrictive”.For example, if you block “L” sub-rating in TV-PG, then the “L” sub-ratings in TV-14 andTV-MA will automatically be blocked. 6 Press the Menu button to clear all the screens. (Or proceed to the next section, and set upadditional restrictions based on the MPAA codes).How to Set up Restrictions Using the MPAA Ratings: G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, XThe MPAA rating system uses the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) system, and itsmain application is for movies.  (Eventually, movie videocassettes will be encoded with MPAA rat-ings.)  When the V-Chip lock is on, the TV will automatically block any programs that are codedwith objectionable ratings (either MPAA or TV-Ratings). 1 Press the Menu button.  Move the joystickdown to select SETUP, then press thejoystick to enter.                  Move the joystick down to select theV-chip, then press the joystick to enter.The “Enter PIN” screen will appear. (See next step.)                        4At this point, one of the TV-Ratings is highlighted (Bluecolor).  Move the joystick right:Depending on your existingsetup, a letter “U” or“B” will be highlighted.(U=Unblocked, B=Blocked).         Move the joystick down or up toblock or unblock the category.  Move the joystick tothe right.  To select a different TV-Rating, move the joy-stick down or up and then repeat the process.             Note 1: TV-Y7, TV-PG, TV-14 and TV-MA have addi-tional options.  See the next step to change any of thefollowing sub-ratings: FV:Fantasy violence, D:Dialog,L:Language, S:Sexual situation, V:Violence                  Note 2: The V-Chip will automatically block certaincategories that are “more restrictive.” For example, ifyou block “TV-Y” category, then TV-Y7 will automati-cally be blocked.  Similarly, if you block the TV-G cat-egory, then all the categories in the “young adult”group will be blocked (TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14 and TV-MA).  The sub-ratings (D, L, S, V) work together simi-larly. (See next section.)

A letter (“U” or “B”) will bedisplayed.  Move the joystick down or up to select “U” or“B”.  Press Menu button to save the settings and to clearall screens.                                    Note: The V-Chip will automatically block any categorythat is “more restrictive.”                           For example, if you block the “PG-13” category, then “R”,“NC-17”, and “X” will automatically be blocked also.         How to Reset the TV after the V-Chip Blocks a Channel (“Emergency Escape”)If the TV is tuned to a restricted channel, the V-Chip will block it. The screen will go blank and thefollowing message will appear: “Excessive rating.”To resume normal viewing, tune to a different channel using the number buttons. Under certainconditions (depending on the rating of the local TV programs) the V-Chip might lock out all thechannels. In this case, use the V-Chip button for an “emergency escape”:Press the Menu button. Move the joystick down to select “SETUP”, then press the joystick to enter.Move the joystick down to select “V-chip”, then press the joystick to enter. When the control panel screen appears,click on “Display” and a display dialog-box will appear. Navigate to the “Settings” tab on the dis-play dialog-box. The two key variables that apply to theTV-PC interface are “resolution” and “col-ors.” The correct settings for these two vari-ables are:*  Screen area (sometimes called “resolu-tion”): 1024 x 768 pixels*  Color: “24-bit” color (might also beexpressed as “16 million colors”). Shownat left is a typical screen for “Display” dia-log box. If a vertical-frequency option exists on yourdisplay settings dialog box, the correctvalue is “60” or “60 Hz.” Otherwise, justclick “OK” and exit the dialog box.
